Bank and account selection
A practical step-by-step guide
Choosing a bank is more than an advertisement. It’s a decision that affects your daily finances.
To accomplish its tasks, the NBP performs three key functions:
Bank selection criteria:
1
Fees and commissions:
- Account maintenance: Is it free? If not, what are the conditions to avoid the fee (e.g., minimum monthly inflow to the account, number of card transactions)?
- Card fees: Is the debit card free?
- ATM withdrawals: Are ATM withdrawals from the bank’s ATMs and other networks (e.g. Euronet, Planet Cash) free of charge?
- Transfers: are domestic transfers free? How much do foreign transfers cost, such as to Ukraine?
2
Accessibility and amenities:
- Mobile app and online banking: make sure they are intuitive, secure and available in a language you understand (often Ukrainian or English).
- ATMs and deposit machines: Check their location near where you live and work. Find out how much it costs to withdraw at another network’s ATM.
- Customer service: Does the bank offer service in your language, such as on the hotline?
3
Additional benefits:
- Discount and cashback programs for purchases.
- Start-up bonuses for setting up an account (e.g., PLN 100-200).
- The amount of interest on the funds.
