New place and goals
Leaving home and starting life in a new country is a huge challenge that can seriously undermine motivation. In such a situation, it is crucial to find new sources of strength and purpose to help you get through the difficult times and build a new future. Here are some points to consider to find and maintain motivation in a new environment.
Define a new purpose
Start by defining what you want to achieve in your new place. Instead of focusing on the past, think about what you can build now. This could be learning a language, gaining a professional qualification, finding a job, or even something as simple yet challenging as getting to know your local area. Having a clear goal will give your life direction and make every next step easier. Break down this big goal into smaller, daily tasks and each success, even the smallest, will build your confidence and motivation.
Nurture connections and build new ones
Feeling lonely and isolated is one of the biggest killers of motivation. Keep in touch with family and friends in Ukraine, but at the same time be open to meeting new people in Poland. Join local refugee support groups, participate in language workshops or simply spend time with your neighbours. Creating new social ties can give you a sense of belonging and valuable emotional support. Many organisations NGOs organise integration meetings, which are a great opportunity to meet people in a similar situation.
Take care of your physical and mental health
Motivation is often inextricably linked to your overall wellbeing. Daily physical activity, even a short walk, can significantly improve your mood. Also remember to eat healthily and get enough sleep. Taking care of your mental health is equally important. Don’t be afraid to seek professional psychological help if you feel overwhelmed by stress and anxiety. There are a number of free refugee support programmes available where you can consult with a psychologist.
Find strength in your story
Although leaving home is a painful experience, your story can become your greatest source of strength. You are a person who has experienced a huge change and found the courage to start all over again. Treat your journey as a testament to your perseverance and resilience. This experience has made you stronger. Remember this when you face difficulties and what you have experienced will give you the strength to move forward.
Motivation is a process. There will be days when you feel strong and energized, but there will also be days when you are hit by doubt. It’s important to be understanding of yourself in these more difficult moments and not blame yourself for momentary weaknesses.
