Shopping online is very convenient, but it comes with some risks. In this section, you will learn how to avoid scams when shopping online.
Online shopping is a huge convenience, often offering lower prices and more choice. However, it’s worth being vigilant and following a few important rules to avoid scams.
Rules for safe shopping
Check the credibility of the store:
Before you make a purchase, make sure that the store is legitimate. On its website should be the details of the company: name, business address, e-mail. You can check the store’s credibility in official records:
- CEIDG (Central Register of Information on Economic Activity) for sole proprietorships.
- KRS (National Court Register) for companies.
- REGON (National Official Register of Economic Entities) for all entities.
Read the rules and regulations:
Check the store’s website for purchasing terms and conditions and read them. Remember that you have the right to return the goods within 14 days without giving a reason.
Use unique passwords:
If you set up an account with an online store, use a different password than the one for online banking. That way, even if the store’s database is hacked, your bank account will remain secure.
Be alert:
Beware of offers with incredibly low prices. Avoid stores that look unprofessional or don’t provide contact information. Never enter your card’s PIN on an online form.
Receiving the package from the courier
- Upon receipt of the package, you have the right to open it in the presence of the courier to check that the goods are undamaged and in accordance with the order.
- If the package is damaged, you can refuse to accept it or write a damage report with the courier. This is especially important for delicate products such as electronics or glass.
- If you have chosen the delivery offered by the seller, the seller is responsible for the goods until you pick them up.
Secure online payments
- Pay for purchases through secure systems such as BLIK, PayU, Przelewy24, PayPal. Such systems do not require you to enter your card information directly on the store’s website
- If you pay by card, make sure the store’s website has a padlock symbol and starts with https://
- Never give your card details via email, chat, or SMS
- After successful purchases, always check that the correct amount has been debited from your bank account
