Start not wasting

  1. Buy as much as you use and don’t waste
  2. Plan your meals for at least a week, or even a month
  3. Regularly review your kitchen cupboards and fridge
  4. Buy fruit and vegetables carefully, as they go bad quickly. Estimate how much you really need and buy that much
  5. Browse spices as well
  6. Store fruit and vegetables properly in the fridge
  7. Store dry food in airtight containers to avoid food moths
  8. Only shop with a list of products, list on a piece of paper or in an app such as LISTONIC
  9. Stick to the shopping list
  10. Check the use-by date of products in the shop; goods with a short date are usually within reach, those with a longer date further down the shelf
  11. Compare prices of products per kilo and per litre
  12. Have a trusted retailer for meat, vegetables and fruit
  13. Keep receipts in case goods need to be replaced
  14. Use leftover food creatively, e.g. potatoes for dumplings, possibly pies
  15. Freeze, pasteurise (preserve)
  16. Donate food to food banks
  17. Be assertive about accepting food if it has not been agreed with us
  18. Cook as much as you can eat and prepare what is liked by all
  19. Decide to order food (treat it as a pleasure) only if you do not have food prepared at home
  20. Check the products ingredients list, not just the price
  21. Prepare one-pot dishes, for example in a slow cooker
  22. Use leftover food to make stocks or sauces
  23. Plan your shopping list according to the ingredients available at home
  24. Reduce the use of disposable packaging when alternatives are available
  25. Use reusable shopping bags and avoid buying unnecessary packaging
  26. Repair damaged items instead of buying new ones straight away
  27. Use products to the last drop/gram (e.g. toothpaste, cosmetics)
  28. Consider composting organic leftovers if possible
