Start not wasting
Ways not to waste food, which translates into savings in the budget.
Not wasting food and other resources in a financial context
- Buy as much as you use and don’t waste
- Plan your meals for at least a week, or even a month
- Regularly review your kitchen cupboards and fridge
- Buy fruit and vegetables carefully, as they go bad quickly. Estimate how much you really need and buy that much
- Browse spices as well
- Store fruit and vegetables properly in the fridge
- Store dry food in airtight containers to avoid food moths
- Only shop with a list of products, list on a piece of paper or in an app such as LISTONIC
- Stick to the shopping list
- Check the use-by date of products in the shop; goods with a short date are usually within reach, those with a longer date further down the shelf
- Compare prices of products per kilo and per litre
- Have a trusted retailer for meat, vegetables and fruit
- Keep receipts in case goods need to be replaced
- Use leftover food creatively, e.g. potatoes for dumplings, possibly pies
- Freeze, pasteurise (preserve)
- Donate food to food banks
- Be assertive about accepting food if it has not been agreed with us
- Cook as much as you can eat and prepare what is liked by all
- Decide to order food (treat it as a pleasure) only if you do not have food prepared at home
- Check the products ingredients list, not just the price
- Prepare one-pot dishes, for example in a slow cooker
- Use leftover food to make stocks or sauces
- Plan your shopping list according to the ingredients available at home
- Reduce the use of disposable packaging when alternatives are available
- Use reusable shopping bags and avoid buying unnecessary packaging
- Repair damaged items instead of buying new ones straight away
- Use products to the last drop/gram (e.g. toothpaste, cosmetics)
- Consider composting organic leftovers if possible
